3 It is therefore not surprising that almost a century passed without an odwira festival being held after the British had defeated the Asante and exiled the Asantehene Agyeman Prempe I to the Seychelles in 1896. It was only under the last Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, that the tradition of the odwira was revived in 1985, but with substantially less symbolic importance (see McCaskie 1995, 151).
